When’s bamboo not bamboo?

My friend’s daughter is getting married this August. The wedding theme is “bamboo.” The table centrepieces will include Lucky Bamboo sometimes also called Curly Bamboo.

Some believe Lucky Bamboo brings good luck and wealth. The round shape with layers gives you good Feng Shui (fortune). It also brings green color into your room with a live growing plant.

But did you know lucky/curly bamboo isn’t bamboo at all?

So if it’s not bamboo, what is it?

According to Wikipedia, Lucky Bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana, known as Ribbon Dracaena, or sometimes Ribbon Plant, is a species of Dracaena, native to Cameroon in tropical west Africa.

It is one of a group of small, shrubby species with slender stems and flexible strap-shaped leaves that grow as understory plants in rainforests. It is an upright shrub growing to 1.5 m tall, with leaves 15-25 cm long and 1.5-4 cm broad at the base.

  • Although it is not related to the bamboo plant, in the United States it is often sold as “lucky bamboo” in such varied locations as Chinatown convenience stores, shopping mall kiosks, and botánicas.
  • Dracaena sanderiana is toxic to pets.
  • Dracaena sanderiana is also a popular plant used in Feng Shui.
