Geeky at 13 and still a bit of a geek
This week’s theme is Thirteen. My cousin Dinah and I are the same age: thirteen. This I know because the date is on the back of this photo.
These events all happened in the year I was thirteen:
- The Canada Pension Plan begins operation.
- The Munsinger Affair is the first Canadian sex scandal.
- Premier of Saskatchewan is W. Ross Thatcher.
- Bobby Hull sets the record for the most goals in the NHL.
- CBC is the first television station to broadcast in colour.
- The Centennial Flame is lit in Ottawa.
- A Man For All Seasons wins the Academy Award for best picture.
- Elizabeth Taylor wins the Oscar for Best Actress in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
- Frank Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night and Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made For Walking top the record charts.
- Cabaret is top box office musical on Broadway.
- Sophie Tucker dies; Janet Jackson is born.
Look at how skinny we both are. Puberty came later in those days I guess. Look at my white sneakers — I had to fight to get them rather than high top basketball sneakers. My glasses are better than I remember. I started wearing glasses at age 6 until about ten years ago when I finally had my eyes lasered (best thing I ever did). The weirdest thing is that I have a head of hair! Well, at 16 or 17, the head of hair started to go, one hair at a time (sigh).
These were more innocent and gentle times, I think. Sure, there was a lot going on outside of our little city of Regina, Saskatchewan but in our world, without all the media information, it was a kinder place in which to grow up.
[PS: the answer is in the photo caption.]
Thanks to Hootin’ Anni who kindly gave
this award to all PhotoHunters this week!

I can hear the person taking the picture now, “Come on! Move closer together! Come ooooonnnn. I need to get you both in the shot.”
I remember when I was younger and my Mom or Dad would say things like that and when you saw the picture there was a crap load of space on both sides of the picture.
Maybe the viewfinder in them older cameras only showed 50% of the actual area the picture will show?
You are so right about the media comment. I believe back when I was younger life seemed to be so much safer and kids actually played outdoors compared to today.

It was in 1966 !! (thanks to Janet Jackson, lol ) the other happenings in Canada I didn’t know of course.
Puberty I think comes for some boys and girls later or earlier, it depends. When I look at a picture when I was 12 I looked already like 18, lol ! and that was in 1955 !

I guess this must be in the early or mid-60s. My parents’ photos have the same feel and look.

hey Larry - I forgot to mention, I was in Florence at the beginning of October last year with my son - we had a fantastic time. I have spent quite a bit of time in Florence and really love it.

I knew you were a youngster from your “Party” entry, and now I know just how young you are!
I’m glad I don’t have any photos of me at 13!

The only things I remember there are the Sinatra songs.
I think we were born in the same decade.

That is such a great post! And a lot of great finds for that nice year! What great fax… And it’s great to see a neighborhood in Canada at that time.

What a great photograph! I grew up in a smallish city in the 1970’s, and even then, I seem to remember the world being less scary and pressure-filled than it is now. But maybe that’s just because I read the news, and I didn’t at 13.

I was pretty close on the year without knowing any of those time related facts specifically. I think it started in Southern California. I couldn’t ride my bike anywhere because of the traffic–and I am somewhat older than you. Other things were still safer, though. Great thirteen.

Ah, being a kid. I was one in 1966, but grew up in a small town in Oregon. We made forts, rode bikes, walked down to the river, climbed trees, played tag. It was a great childhood and seemed much less complicated than the world is today. Happy hunting!
