Hauling water may be old-fashioned but we did it

This week’s theme is OLD-FASHIONED. We take for granted many of the modern conveniences we enjoy today. Drinking water comes directly to many of our homes. Some of us can remember when that wasn’t the case.

Imagine hauling your pail to a common public water source like this one in Provence, France. The sign above it warned that if there was water in the trough it was certainly nonpotable.

(Here’s the “I remember when” story) Our first home in Regina was outside the city limits and therefore there wasn’t any services. The family story goes that in the winter my mother would put five-gallon pails on a sleigh and walk three blocks to a public water pipe. Apparently I whined and cried until Mom let me go with her to get the water.

“And then I had to carry you and the water back on that sleigh,” my mother would harrumph loudly as she retold the story again and again.

Don’t you enjoy that word “nonpotable”? However, don’t forget nonpotable water can be used in places such as this fountain where one expects people will not drink the water.

I couldn’t agree more about the water. We carried buckets of water to the house from storage tanks outside - a much more convenient chore! Nice shots.

Definitely old fashioned! It’s amazing to think of how much “free” time we have these days. Used to be so much of the day was spent on simple survival. I think sometimes generations before were better off, in some respects. My “old fashioned” is a simple survival theme, too.

I have to say I wouldn’t even dream of taking a drink from that top one! You do certainly see quite a number of eau non potable signs in France. But you’re right of course, we do take things for granted. So many people in the world lacka clean safe water supply.

This is very true. It’s often easy to take for granted things that we have access to each day. Water is very important and I’m fortunate that it is not a problem where I live. Our tap water is potable.

In the Philippines, there are still some areas where water is not so abundant. In these places, people would line up with buckets and take turns filling their containers with water to bring home. The water they get is not potable and they have to boil it before it can be fit for drinking.

The water tap was only a block away, at the corner of Dewdney and Bond St.
