Getting a leg up

Photo Theme: FLEXIBLE
As I said last week, expect some recent vacation photos
to somehow apply to the PhotoHunt theme!

In the French town of Eze. I jumped up on this cannon embedded in the fortress walls. It was higher than I thought but I was still flexible enough to do it.

This week’s theme is FLEXIBLE.

Heading up the path towards the medieval fortressed city of Eze in the south of France, I saw the perfect vacation photo opportunity.

Without nary a thought about the hordes of tourists walking alongside, I mustered up muscle-memories of doing gymnastics as a kid. I grabbed the muzzle, swung myself around and stuck a perfect landing onto the cannon.

Pretty flexible even at my age, don’t you think?

I do admit there may have been a bit of huffing and puffing to climb up on my perch, but there I sat waiting for the photo. I heard cameras snapping but when I looked over at my friends they were doubled over laughing at me.

So there I sat with that cannon between my legs for a few minutes waiting for them to compose themselves to take a photo. Getting up there was hard enough so I wasn’t about to get down until I got my photo op.

I know I probably am in a few stranger’s vacation photo albums. I imagine they might caption that photo as “we don’t know the old goof, but he sure was FLEXIBLE enough to get up on that cannon.”

HISTORY LESSON: The cannon is embedded in the walls of the French medieval fortress town of Eze in the south of France, close to Nice.

View of the town of Eze in the South of France.

The village sits like an eagle’s nest on a large rock 400 meters above the sea. Eze once surrounded a 12th century fortified castle. The castle was torn down in 1706, but the village remains, and forms a circular pattern around the base of the castle. The restored village now contains many artisans, and shoppers can spend a lot of time wandering in and out of the cave-like shops. There are also some perfumeries, and a wonderful aromatic selection of spices for sale.

This chair was sitting outside a door so I took a break and sat. Notice I had my flip-flops on that day. Who knew there was going to be so many stairs to climb in Eze?

Eze streets are narrow and shops are often in cave-like burrows. Donkeys were banned years ago as the risk of hurting one of the hordes of tourists was too great.

Eze has been restored and many residents are artisans so you can buy art, carving, leatherwork, jewellry and unique gifts.

I’m sure you’ve seen the comics/comedians who jump on a horse and just slide right off the other side? Yes? Well, if I were to attempt to straddle that cannon, I would most definitely end up OFF….on the other side, just like the cartoons. Guaranteed!!!

Fabulous photos Larry….and great history lesson!!
    Happy weekend.
