When we went to Spain I managed to roll all the clothes I needed to fit in my carry-on. My checked baggage was practically empty as I saved the room for shopping purchases. I bring a retractable clothes line with me as I plan on doing a wash while away. That way I can travel quite light and if I forgot anything (like a pair of dressy shoes or outfit) I have a valid excuse for shopping.
