This Saturday’s theme is COOKED/ING. My niece’s wedding cake started out as a simple, flat-slab cake. Somehow within less than a month, her wedding cake morphed into this. My previous post about my niece’s wedding gives you everything and more than you’ll want to know about that blessed event.
My housemate Kenneth baked the cakes. I did the cake decorating. Even though the cake is a bit of a stretch to fit this week’s theme, I just wanted to toot my own horn but once again about actually creating it.
I didn’t have a clue about what goes in to making a wedding cake when I agreed to make this one.
Fondant? What’s that I said with great dread. In fact, until my niece e-mailed me a picture of what she’d like her cake to look like, I didn’t know squat about fondant.
When I saw the photo, I said “no problem.” Then I ran to our local Ming-Wo shop where the kind staff walked me through and sold me all the things necessary to pull this off.
The cake topper is my niece’s in-laws wedding cake topper from their marriage about 30 years ago.
I individually pasted, the morning of the wedding of course, each one of the various sized pearls to the cake. And those are pearls from the bead store, not those fake little silver thingies.
I have a cupboard full of assorted cake decorating paraphernalia none of which has been touched since I made this cake. Now I know why wedding suppliers charge $800 to $1000 for a wedding cake.
