Shuck and pluck
Only two more sleeps until World Naked Gardening Day on May 5. This is the third year naked people who garden have celebrated this day sans clothing.
Here’s their rationale about why you should garden naked.
First of all, it’s fun! Second only to swimming, gardening is at the top of the list of family-friendly activities people are most ready to consider doing nude.
Moreover, our culture needs to move toward a healthy sense of both body acceptance and our relation to the natural environment.
Gardening naked is not only a simple joy, it reminds us–even if only for those few sunkissed minutes–that we can be honest with who we are as humans and as part of this planet.
Let me back up a step here.
As a kid, my mother made us go and pick the bugs off the potato plants. I mowed the lawn with an old gas-guzzling lawnmower my father found someplace or other. I pulled out many dandelions and thistles from the yard after lots of nagging from my mother.
But nope, I’ve no recollection of being naked during our family gardening time. Did you ever garden naked?
Secondly, those few “sunkissed minutes” have unfortunately came back to bite me on the butt.
I’ve had several basal cell skin cancers removed because of my fondness for tanning. Now I wear at least a #45 sunblock and rarely sit in the sun at all.
And contrary to popular belief, I preferred to wear my bathing suit whenever I went to Vancouver’s infamous Wreck Beach.
Having said all that, apparently Des Kennedy often gardens in the nude.
Just how does he keep the bees and wasps away from that shock of red hair is all I can think about when I see him on television or in magazine articles.
The television series, Recreating Eden features Mr. Kennedy’s magical garden and is worthwhile checking out.
You could always kill three birds with one stone on May 5 by watching Recreating Eden without a stitch of clothing on. It’s worth considering I think.

Shudders at the thought of a gardener bent over tending the tomatoes and seeing dangling cherries instead. YIKES!

Yikes, my thoughts exactly! Not only that but wrinkly prunes also come to mind — the horror of it could go on and on I think.
