This Saturday’s theme is STEPS.
I considered several photos for this week’s theme. For some curious reason, I chose this photo mainly because it’s that moment in time common to many people when we step outside our comfort zone.
Yes, my friends, that is me at the age of three with my cousin Glenys.
As I’ve mentioned many times before, I was born in the middle of the bald prairies in Regina, Saskatchewan. This was my first memory — captured by our trusty Brownie camera — of stepping into more water than that contained in our tiny bathtub.
The location is Regina Beach about 30 minutes away from the city but back then it seemed like we’d driven to some foreign land. I have taken swimming lessons many times throughout my life. I still only manage a weak dog paddle at the best of times and usually sink like a stone at the mere thought of being in water over my head.
In case you didn’t notice, I am standing there in my baggy, sort-of white and most likely Fruit of the Loom briefs. But at three who knew there was such a thing as a “bathing suit” Imagine that, clothes to bathe in. What would they think of next? A topless bathing suit? Pshaw, don’t tell me it’s been done!
Totally unrelated factoid just because the theme of steps made me think of it. Add this to your cocktail party chatter when you want to impress someone.
Did you know Neil Armstrong planned and believed he said, “That’s one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind.” However, thorough analysis of the audio undertaken many times throughout the years, does not seem to confirm that he did include the “a” in those historic words he spoke as he stepped upon the moon’s surface.

I can swim but don’t do the breathing right so I prefer the backstroke. Keeps the face uncovered most of the time, at least the way I do it, it does.
These pictures are those our parents keep filed under: “Pictures to show new boyfriend/girlfriend.” Yes, indeed.

Great photo of a wonderful childhood memory! I’m very familiar with the Canadian prairies having spent the first 8 years of my life in Winnipeg. I remember visiting the beaches at Lake Manitoba in the summer.

That’s so cool! I had a Brownie camera and remember running all over photographing things, trying to figure out how to take shots that would look like what I saw but in b&w. We all stood stiff like that, didn’t we.

Isn’t that the truth — why did we all stand like that? I’m starting to sound like an old fart now but will say it anyway, “wasn’t life a lot simplier and more fun back then?” Take away those electronic gizmos. All we needed was an empty can to kick around and we seemed to amuse ourselves for hours — but have to confess that we might have “accidentally” kicked each other once or twice too just to add to the excitement of kick the can.
