The BUNTIC is born

2000button

There are 55 million blogs out there someplace — and just about that many egos too!

Now there is the BUNTIC, a term coined by Ed at Hotel@nyware. Ed’s suggesting that to make a BUNTIC will mean to gather together 2000.

Tino Buntic began an ambitious project on January 14 when he announced he would showcase 2,000 bloggers by posting a thumbnail of each blogger’s mug.

(My previous entry about his project is here: "Can he gather MM bloggers?")

Tino has caused quite a stir among bloggers. He’s gathered about 1,200 blogger’s photos already and is trying to process more each day. If you haven’t seen Tino’s 2,000 bloggers post yet, check it out HERE.

2000 books

Hot on the heels of Tino’s project, Hotel@nyware has expanded the 2000 Bloggers premise.

He’s asking the 2,000 to tell him what their favourite book is so that he can make a post featuring a mosaic of books covers mirroring Tino’s mugshot post. Because Ed coined the term, I’m giving him credit for the first BUNTIC to surface following Tino’s original 2000 Bloggers project.

I submitted Shani Mootoo’s novel, Cereus Blooms at Night to the Books BUNTIC.

Seeing the sociological implications of 2000 Bloggers, Steven Aitchison is asking the 2000 Bloggers to tell him which thumbnail photo appeals most and why. He’s hoping to come up with some type of statistical relationship from these submissions.

Not to let the statisticians do all the fun stuff, eDragonu is collecting the astrological signs of the 2000 Bloggers. As an astrologer, he’d like to examine the astrological sign distribution in this microcosm of 2000 Bloggers.

While I’ve got 2000 on the brain, Tino has also started a 2000 Bloggers community at MyBlog. If I may be so bold as to suggest, it is the first MyBlog BUNTIC.

If you’re a visual kind of person, One Powerful Word - Thought has started a geomap for 2000 Bloggers to join.

Some may call all this 2000 project a simple “linkfest” or blogger link vanity or as a fellow blogger bluntly said “link whoring.” Call it what you may, isn’t it interesting how quickly people want to be included? Tino’s come up with a simple but innovative link sharing project and I say good on him for doing it.

Let the BUNTICs begin!

Update: February 7, 2007
In light of recent information about reposting the entire 2000 Bloggers list, I have deleted the code from this entry. Although Tino Buntic has stopped the project, other sites such as this one have emerged and continue to post the list. Some of the 2,000 Bloggers are now opting out of participating.

Rose provides some compelling arguments about why she’s decided to opt out.

Update: February 1, 2007
Tino Buntic has kindly made the code available for the 2000 Bloggers mugshot listing. It’s getting closer and closer to the magic BUNTIC 2000 mark. If you’d like to see all the 2000 Bloggers to date, click on “read the rest here” that follows.
