This Saturday’s theme is Memory. This week’s photo is a black and white shot of me on my fifth birthday. Being a January baby, I hadn’t started school yet. I think I look happy in my fifth birthday picture.

This photo is of my sixth birthday. (Click on the photo for a larger view.)

I think I aged in that one year quite a bit. I do remember how mean and harsh my kindergarten teacher was (Miss something or other). I know I loved that bow-tie and wore it constantly. The bow-tie and white shirt stick out quite prominently in my kindergarten picture.

At what age do your childhood memories become the clearest?

I have vague, blurry memories of myself until about age 10. Memories of those early years, I think are based on old photos like these that have been kicking around the family for years.

I remember that my stomach started hurting regularly when I started school. I found out quickly mentioning my stomach ache was whining and boys don’t whine. So my stomach hurt and I went to school and I was a good kid.

Isn’t it interesting though that I had stomach aches all through school. The pain was just what I thought every kid experienced. When I was in university, I kept having dizzy spells, went to the doctor who took blood tests and other tests. Basically, I had something wrong in my guts and was bleeding to death.

He wanted to operate right then but I had to finish my semester and so went in to hospital in April where I had a major gastrointestinal operation. Wouldn’t you know it, I had suffered all those years with an abnormality in my guts but was told it was all in my head. But that was then and this is now.

No wonder my childhood memories are so vague.

What great photos and wow.. bittersweet memories. I can’t remember anything past 12 so you have me beat by a couple of years in the childhood memory department lol. Anything before that are memories created by stories told to me or photos.

Great photos! Not a very nice memory of stomach aches though! My first memory is just before I turned 3 years old (when my sister was born - I have vivid memories of visiting my mother in the hospital) but other than memories of single events, my memories start becoming clear around age 5 or 6.

That makes me so angry to hear.
I had constant tonsilitis and finally got them taken out when I was 18!
I missed out on a lot of school and ate lots of penicillin too!
Anyway - great pictures and glad to hear you’re better now.l
    Happy Saturday.
    Mine’s up too!

Well, my birthday is two days before yours but I try not to celebrate it anymore. Instead, I remember it as my anniversary of a birthday. This is to be my 24th anniversary of my 30th birthday! Works for me!
    Mine is up too.

The morale of the story. Don’t listen to mom. ;)

Glad you finally got that hurt fixed. That took guts and made things better.

I glad you didn’t bleed to death! Poor you suffering all that time thinking it was just something everyone went thought. ;-(

These are great pictures and a very thoughtful post about memories. I suppose the challenge is to try and hang onto the good stuff and let the bad be blurry. Not always so easy.

    Great choice for the hunt!

That is a scary story! I’m glad it’s all over, but that is such a huge chunk of your life. Enjoyed your blog; thank you for looking at my photo.

Isn’t it terrible how we don’t pay attention to our children’s ailments? Well, I’m glad everyone was proven wrong! :p

I love the pictures and the story. Thanks for stopping by to visit me, too. :)
