Put a hat on that baby
What kind of headgear do you wear in winter?
- Is it like the first black and white photo of French comedian Tabarin’s chapeaux? (More info on the Chap-O is in this previous entry "Hats on to you")
- PETA members, avert your eyes. Here’s a hat like no other!
THE CANADIAN. It’s described as an exclusively Canadian cold-weather cap designed to keep your head warm in the harshest of Canadian winters. These guys must have not worn a hat and got “wind in their ears.” It’s the looniest hat I’ve ever seen.
- I’ve been trying to find someone to knit me this hat — (you’ll find the photo in this previous entry: "The depths I plumb to keep up to the latest fashions")
- Maybe it’s like my faux-fur camouflage earflap hat in the second photo. (Notice you don’t see that hat actually on my head. Talk about looking like a doofus, but my ears keep warm.)
We’re in for another dump of snow tonight. Yikes, I moved from Saskatchewan to Vancouver to get out of the snow during winter. What’s up with this? Where’s the rain?
On the cold prairies, you have an entire head wardrobe including a wide variety of toques for the winter. In Canada, “toque” may also be a misspelling of tuque, a knit woollen winter hat, originally worn by French-Canadians but now a staple of the Canadian winter wardrobe. This “fashion” originated when coureurs des bois kept their woollen nightcaps on for warmth during cold winter days.
One of my mother’s admonitions for anyone was to “put a hat on.” And for any babies, she would almost yell, “put a hat on THAT BABY!”
Mom’s reasoning? Without a hat you can get “wind in your ears” resulting in the dreaded “earache.” “And then you’ll be sorry,” she would throw out just to make you feel guiltier.

You’ll be a loonie if you DON’T wear a hat like that in Canada. Seriously, every winter they should just rename this country Hell.

Those certainly look they’d keep the chill off. More snow? How incredible. We’ve just had rain and more rain. Think there’s only been sun 2 days this month.
