Human bodies on exhibit soon
The skinned human bodies and body parts exhibition at Vancouver’s Science World is a go. Of that there is no discussion.
Whether Vancouverites should actually patronize the exhibit has been the subject of recent debate. A debate that will continue once the exhibit opens and until it closes, I can assure you.
Should dead human body parts and entire bodies be placed on display for the casual viewer?
Is the realm of viewing dead humans exclusive to those in fields of science where it is a learning tool for such professionals?
Is it morally wrong to display dead human bodies? And taking it further, is it okay to remove the skin and display the muscles and inner organs not normally seen?
People have been curious and fascinated by the human body throughout the ages. Whether it be the oddities put on display in sideshows to websites featuring “human marvels.”
Personally, I get a bit queasy at the thought of taking in this exhibition. Yet something draws me to it. I will probably go and take it in. I hope I come away with an appreciation of the marvel of the human body.
I am reading as much as I can about the exhibit to prepare myself. It’s not something I think anyone should just walk into without preparation.
Here’s more detail about the Body Worlds 3 Exhibition:
Opening this September at Vancouver’s Science World is Dr. Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds 3: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies.
This exhibition features 200 human body parts and full bodies that have been preserved through a process called plastination. Many are shown in various poses, such as playing chess, or soccer.
Body Worlds 3 opens at Vancouver’s Science World on Friday, Sept. 15, and continues until Sunday, Jan. 14.

Thanks for the info on that. I’m going to have to mark it down and make a visit to it when it arrives.

Greetings,
Ringmaster of The Human Marvels here.
The work of Hagens is simply incredible. I’ve gone to his recent showcase in Toronto and found it very interesting. I supose it is not for the faint of heart. Of course, I was once a funeral director and my senses are rather dulled toward cadavers.
Did you know that while Hagens perfected the process of plastination, something quite similar has been around for a couple of hundred years. Entire flayed bodies have been sealed in lucite blocks for medical and visual study. The difference is that Hagens actually seals the individual cells in polymer.

The Plastinarium…
It seems like the creator of the Body Worlds exhibits, which have been travelling the world, is now creating a corpse factory. I wonder if they’ll be giving out free samples of corpso-cola and candied carcasses. Actually, the “factory” won’t……
