Garland’s concert recreated

The reviews are in.

Rufus Wainwright took a huge leap of faith when he decided to recreate Judy Garland’s classic 1961 Carnegie Hall show.

Fearful that the show would be too campy, I was relieved to read most of the reviews expressing exactly the opposite.

Reuters described Rufus Wainwright’s show:

“Singer Rufus Wainwright’s idea to perfectly re-create Judy Garland’s legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concert was audacious, brilliant and so utterly simple that it’s a wonder no one thought of it until now…

Performing all 26 numbers plus a two-song encore, Wainwright delivered an impassioned and moving performance that was more homage than stunt.”

The New York Times Review stated:

“What unfolded onstage Wednesday was a tour de force of politically empowering performance art in which a proudly gay male performer paid homage to the original and most durable gay icon in the crowded pantheon of pop divas.”

While the entire concept of recreating a classic performance may have been daunting, there was no lack of drama either. Lorna Luft performed but Liza did not. Wainwright’s sister and mother also performed

In my Googling about the concert, here’s is my favourite tidbit.

In the Huffington Post review, one guy left this enlightened comment:

“Rufus Wainwright doing Judy Garland. Sounds to me like the gay agenda at work. “

I always HMmmm out loud when I read comments like this. I bet my last loonie there is not one tiny bit of artist in that person. And just why would someone so fearful of the “gay agenda” be reading about it?

Time to get a life and move on is my HMmmm on the so-called mysterious gay agenda.
