Cheers to Queen Vicki

Today is Victoria Day or as they say in French, Fête de la Reine. A Canadian Statutory Holiday but in the States the same day is celebrated as Memorial Day.
Victoria Day is celebrated on the Monday on or before May 24 in honour of both Queen Victoria’s birthday and the current reigning Canadian Sovereign’s birthday — Queen Elizabeth II in case you didn’t know.
It is known colloquially as May Two-Four, apparently, although I’ve never heard it referred to that before.
For me, it has always been a welcome holiday in the middle of May.
Time to ravish the garden shops for annuals. But never, never would I dare to plant before May 26 which was Mom-Gladys’ rule for planting. “There always can be frost before May 26,” she would say. Then when chortle if early planters did suffer that dreaded spring frost.
It’s also a time of reflection as well. Mom-Gladys’ passing happened so quickly just six years ago at this time of the year.
New blooms, new life — but also a time of transition — this month of May.
