My latest project: construction including screwing

I’m a lumberjack and that’s okay!

So what have I been up to that the posts have dwindled over the last few weeks?

I’ve been doing manly things with my new compound miter saw. The only saw my brother Mike said was worth its weight in gold. First few slices scared the heck out of me but I’m now devoted to my new companion.

The major construction arena has been my bedroom/office/workroom. My huge queen-size bed sitting luxuriously in the unique “reindeer” frame was simply hogging up too much space. It was just too easy to toss my clean laundry on one side of the bed, then sleep with the laundry for a few days or until everything was just thrown back into the wash.

I passed along my queen-size mattress set. The reindeer bed is going up to my friend’s place in Whistler. I bought one of those new-fangled therapeutic foamy-type beds. It was a bit of adjustment as I wasn’t used to sleeping on a mattress that formed to my lumpy body as you sink into the few inches of super foam or whatever.

The construction part — I wanted a plain, platform for the bed and was disappointed to see the choices and disgusted to see the prices for a few pieces of work to hold a mattress.

With my new compound-miter saw in hand, I scrounged around the carport and garden shed and started sawing, nailing, screwing and yes, I even counter-sank all those screws. The bonus in my recycled platform bed project was unexpected but perfect for the job. My neighbour had just renovated her condo and had a few bits of extra hardwood flooring. I used the hardwood for the sides of the platform that actually keep the mattress from slipping off the platform base.

But hold onto your hats, happy campers! There’s more. Not only were the platform beds expensive but headboards are ugly or just not available.

My friend Faye gave me a huge bag of leather scraps when she bought some new furniture recently. The scraps were just the right size for 10″ squares which I have padded with some cheap batting. I’ve attached the leather squares to a piece of scrap board and dontchaknow, a perfect headboard for my newly constructed platform bed.

I’ll post some pictures of my projects real soon. Take care (I just spit on the floor as I typed that) and post at your soon.
